“You can’ have a perception of anything in reality without piecing things together. Like if I want to perceive a cup or if I want to perceive you as an entity, I need to put together your arms and your legs and your torso with your mouth and so on and perceive you as an entity – and same thing goes for everything. All the perceptual moments and data need to be grouped together again through abstraction.
And what meditation does, it kind of disentangles this, you could say this unification that the mind is doing. And actually in that process reveals a deeper unification. Because it’s taking all the little pieces of this moment that is just sort of coherently put together for us and letting go of that habit of putting it all together into these objects and categories and thoughts and patterns. And then by doing that you’re getting this discoherence in neural activity – this is my hypthesis – which then eventually leads to the inference of consciousness – this habit of consciousness – breaking down.”
